Professor Sompohi Baya is an ambassador for "Glalogy".

Working with recycled materials such as plastic water jugs and pvc piping Sompohi creates iconic, mythic structures in the image of Gla.
Gla = is the spirit and identity of "we" society.
The Gla manifests in nature and the work of human beings. Inspired by the spirit of Gla, Professor Sompohi Baya has created Glalogy, and objects in the image of Gla in order to spread the message of "we" society. Once the face of Gla is manifest, one can turn it to see the church, the mosque, the temple, the American Rocket and the Buddha; thus spreading the message of peace and diversity, seeing all people as one.

Through a curious amalgam of neo-mysticism and cultural empiricism Samson centers the dialogue in his work between the realities and artifacts of natural history and the fantasies and irrationalities of science fiction. His paintings, created using spray paint, acrylic, canvas, chipboard, and light fixtures, draw from notions and representations of the concepts of quantum mechanics. His work returns a stylistic minimalism to its mystical roots.

Interdisciplinary art duo, LoVid is comprised of Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus. Their work begins in the audio video world through original video symphonies they compose and perform on synthesizers they themselvs create. A truly self made and contained module, LoVid writes of their collage and patchworks, "Our collages are saturated reconstructions of video stills printed on paper and fabric... These patchworks are the materialization of video and the preservation of information that could otherwise be lost due to media broadcasting standards. Video stills are transferred onto fabric and rearranged to mimic the density and intensity of movement in our audiovisual work." LoVid is currently an artist in residence at Smack Melon in Brooklyn.

Colt Hausman's print work brings me to a systematic, coded space. I imagine that to interact in this universe one must know multiple series of cryptographic medleys. The prints are interfaces for playing these medleys and the color imprint reveals various truths when harmonies are achieved.

I first met Trent when I was studying at Rutgers. We bonded over tofu. My family having mainstreamed it in the 80's, his commitment to telling the story of the parallel universe of the "mounds", half people half plants, and their adventures with vegan tofu eaters. For me, his work is an inspiration to the detail and depth with which artists are able to communicate the worlds they see, or want to see. Jesse Greenberg writes in his artist statement, "If today’s ATM was yesterday’s water well, then our debit card is the water bucket dipped into our financial pools. These kiosks have existed through time. They are totems to humans functions and portals for interaction, as opposed to grand statues and monuments, which record our achievements and memorialize events from times past. The kiosk is a functional machine sculpted for our actions and necessities."
His works stand as "kiosks" to other worldly interaction; his art inviting the viewer to touch, as with his "touchables", evoking a scenery of candy colored space ships and buttoned maps.

Art collective, Bobo is dressing up as vigilante this time as it "blows the whistle" on the lineage of trend and power in their new piece "blood lines". A paranoid, tongue and cheek dance in semiotics, the group approaches the generational hand off of the symbol's potency and its subversive persuasion tactics in a cross referential family tree of the underground art world, of which they are of course, and ironically embedded within.

A self conscious look at what makes kids popular, "Blood Lines" is an inside piece of cultural anthropology.

Lizzie Fitch, the soldier baby and the store-bought mom

By creating a sculpture using mass produced, branded materials (ie: jc penny clothing, new balance sneakers, baby army crocs) wearing a wig, Lizzie Fitch created art that not only speaks of a contemporary narrative, but appears to be the messenger as well.

A ghost like figure in the gallery, she bends over backwards baring the breasts of the artist while accompanying a heavy, brittle, hostile child. The unbalance of the mother's stance gives the whole sculpture a deep sense of unease; the New Balance sneakers next to her a meager attempt to restore balance. She has kept all the tags on her purchases just in case she needs to return something. Crumbling next to her, the baby is protected by a caulking gun, comes with a pair of army Crocs (already personalized with plastic animal buttons) but needs to lean on a stack of loose bricks to stay upright. His gun will solve most of his problems, (except in his soft polyester filled center); the Crocs will let him begin his proper training in the army (while still maintaining individuality with his personalized animal buttons). At the ground level is the pillow they share: coated with gravel and smothered in afterbirth.

Whether it is a statement of the artist's process, her feelings on maternity, the plagued notion of raising soldiers, the growing autism birthrate, Sarah Palin, teenage pregnancy, consumerism, comfort, cellulite, authenticity, privacy, or just the double edged sword of creation in general, it has raised these questions and conversations within the time it has been part of the Multi Faceted Female.

Lizzie is represented by Elizabeth Dee gallery, as sculptural partner to film maker Ryan Trecartin. They currently have shows up at Elizabeth Dee Gallery, The New Museum and Fabric Workshop Museum in Philadelphia.

In 1985 Dennis Avner began transforming his image to resemble a tiger, his totem animal through tattooing and plastic surgery. Similarly, in 1990 Jocelyn Wildenstein started undergoing a series of plastic surgeries that gave the public reason to start referring to her as "Cat Woman." Using these two extreme body modification entrepreneurs as inspiration spawned INHUMINAAHUMINI- a facial modification salon you can turn to when you're aching to set yourself apart from the masses or simply change your identity. These are some examples of the endless possibilities.

Annie Pearlman's "Landscape"

Some artists create objects, and some artists create space. Annie Pearlman is of the latter. Whenever put in front of paper or canvas, Annie continuously creates wide open surrealistic landscapes. Haunted by cartoon undertones and studio lighting, these "outdoor" scenes are portals into Pearlman's freeforming universe, and often serve as backdrops for her digital videos.

Liz Rywelski's American Portraits

In these portraits, artist, Liz Rywelski , visits Kmart stores, creates a temporary identity and then asks for the assistance of the store’s employees in having her portrait taken.

On one trip she is a recent college graduate, hoping to take pictures to send to her family. On another trip, she is the fiance of a soldier stationed in Iraq, and wants to send her beau a portrait. She introduces herself to some of the employees as a customer in need of assistance, creative assistance, and then allows herself to become a canvas for their creativity and their sense of style. She asks them to choose clothes for her, makeup, accessories, and then in the in-store photo studio, staffed by an untrained photographer, she allows them to select the best backdrop, props and poses.

Rywelskis project is based on her role as facilitator as opposed to singular creator. However, instead of collaborating with a singular artist-genius, Rywelski collaborates with the employees of Kmart, working individuals whose low-wage employment at a large retailer has been expurgated of most substantive creativity. She allows these employees to transform their role as wage-laborers into creators – working with them in the store, they become Rywelski’s master printers.

"Celebration" by Raul Denieves

Raul was the only male artist included the "Multi Faceted Female" show. Asked to make a portrait of his mother, "Celebration" is the cosmic outcome of this request. Birthing a child, she is a mother, she is the moon, she shines off the light of her own creation. A Mardi-Gras Madonna, she celebrates her labor with an explosive fervor; just like the artist himself. Made entirely of tape, glue and beads, she is a vivid testament to the immense beauty and possibility inherent in simple tools and "low art" craft objects.

Renata Mann's World Wide Web

Jeweler Designer by trade, Renata Mann extends her trademark woven necklaces into an intricate luminescent web. Mann has the ability to weave together disparate materials into a homogeneous whole and breath energy through her designs. The Mother Board by Molly Lowe

The Motherboard, a Cockpit.

A control center, a thinking cell, an active brain.

Made nearly entirely of found materials and recycled trash, the mother board asks us to cross into an internal system of semiotic processors and configurations, as signs tell us to "touch/don't" "go/stop" "male" "female". This complex system leads one to ultimately wonder "who designed this?", as Lowe's aesthetic makes no attempts to hide the make shift, DIY approach holding together this artificial intelligence. What is the organic reasoning dictating this control device, and what is it controlling?

A compelling view on notions of electrical motherhood, the desire to communicate with the unknown, and the need to control.
